Sony Pictures A new installment of the franchise is underway Karate Kidwhich is titled Karate Kid: Legendsand of which it has already released a first look.
Through the official poster we meet the new Karate Kid. This is the young actor Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) playing Li Fong, whom we see on the poster alongside Jackie Chan y Ralph Macchioreprising their roles as Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, respectively.
He coming-of-age will continue the mythology of the original franchise.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. What is known is that the new installment will bring the story to the East Coast and will focus on a teenager from China (Wang) who finds strength and direction through martial arts and a tough but wise mentor (or two).
It is unknown if its events will be linked to the series Cobra Kaiwhich will end next year after six seasons.
The project was originally announced in September 2022, while Macchio and Chan's involvement was revealed in 2023.
Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the original film, The Karate Kid (1984), and the two sequels in 1986 and 1989. He also took it up again in Cobra Kai. Chan, for his part, gave life to Mr. Han in the 2010 reboot, The Karate Kid.
In Wang's case, a global casting call was conducted for the role of Li Fong, which the young man won in February of this year.
Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek, Doctor Odyssey, Dr. Death), Ming-Na Wen (Mulan, Agents of SHIELD, The Mandalorian) y Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident), complete the cast.
Jonathan Entwistle (I’m Not Okay With This, The End of the F***ing World) directs the feature film written by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day).
Karen Rosenfelt (Dopesick, Me Before Yousaga Twilight) produces the feature film.
Sony Pictures will release Karate Kid: Legends on May 30, 2025.
