Hans Zimmer has been left out of contention for a possible nomination to the Oscar for his work on the original soundtrack of Dune: Part Two of Denis Villeneuve.
The above, according to information shared by Variety, is due to the fact that Zimmer's OST for said film does not meet the requirements to be eligible, since it exceeds the limits of the use of pre-existing music:
The Academy rule states:
“In cases such as sequels and franchises of any medium, the soundtrack must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music taken from previous soundtracks of the franchise.”
Since Zimmer's composition for Dune 2 incorporates substantial elements of your work in the first delivery, Dune of 2021, is outside the eligibility criteria.
But Zimmer's chances of getting recognition for his work on the sequel's OST don't end here, as he may still be eligible for other ceremonies such as the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the Grammys.
Additionally, another of Zimmer's works this year, the soundtrack to director Steven McQueen's war drama Blitz, may be eligible for an Oscar nomination.
Other great musical compositions that were ineligible for the Oscars include the soundtracks of Arrival (Jóhann Jóhannsson), Drive (Cliff Martinez), Black Swan (Clint Mansell), There Will Be Blood (Jonny Greenwood), y The Master (Jonny Greenwood).
Zimmer has so far, 12 Oscar nominations, and 2 wins (The Lion King, Dune).
The plot of Dune: Parte Two explores the mythical journey of Paul Atreides as he joins Chani and the Fremen as he seeks revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Faced with a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he strives to avoid a terrible future that only he can foresee.
The cast of the sequel was headed by Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux.
The sequel is available on HBO and MAX.
