Irreplaceable, unmatched, original, bold. Those are the words with which I would describe the legendary Diane Keaton. The Oscar-winning actress died on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at age 79, in California.

The causes of his death have not been revealed. People was the first media to report the unfortunate news, while TMZ said that an ambulance arrived at her house shortly after 8 am, to be transported to a hospital.

Let's review his extensive filmography remembering his best roles.

Keaton made her film debut as an unhappy wife in Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), to later join The Godfather (1972) as Kay Adams, the girlfriend of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). Kay is a non-Sicilian woman in a mafia clan, a stranger, a woman in a man's world. The actress was part of the entire trilogy of The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola.

Keaton later won the hearts of the industry with his role in the classic Annie Hall (1977) by Woody Allen, which won her the Oscar for best actress at the 1978 gala.

In addition to Annie HallKeaton's other collaborations with Allen include Play It Again, Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), Interiors (1978), Manhattan (1979), Radio Days (1987), y Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993).

With his peculiar wardrobe in Annie Hallwith clothing generally related to the male gender, ties, vests, fedora hats and baggy pants, inspired a “look” for all times, and particularly his personal look, which consisted primarily of his turtlenecks, boots, wide belts, and large hats.

The Keaton's filmography and acting range is of utmost value. His other notable roles include the rom-com Something’s Gotta Give (2003) by Nancy Meyers, playing a playwright who becomes involved with a womanizer played by Jack Nicholson.

By the way, in Meyers' romantic comedy, for which Keaton received her fourth Oscar nomination for best actress, she gives us one of the best performances as a woman who experiences love and heartbreak, portraying in a single sequence the pain of having a broken heart with such skill that you can't help but feel bad and laugh at the same time. If heartbreak were a movie scene, this would be it:

Her other two nominations were for her work on Reds (1981) by Warren Beatty, and by Marvin’s Room (1996) as a woman with leukemia. We can't get past her performance as a Catholic school teacher who frequents dark singles bars in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), his leading role in the thriller The Little Drummer Girl (1984), and the emotional Crimes of the Heart (1986) with Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek.

Comedies and Keaton went hand in hand, from installments like Baby Boom (1987), the two films Father of the Bride (1991, 1995), the emblematic The First Wives Club (1996) screen sharing with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, with the trio giving us one of the best final scenes in cinema, Because I Said So (2007) as a controlling mom, Morning Glory (2010) as a TV host at war with her co-host (played by Harrison Ford), the Christmas project, Love the Coopers (2015), the two installments of Book Club (2018, 2023) alongside Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, Maybe I Do (2023), and his most recent and last film, Book Camp (2024), alongside Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodward, as three childhood best friends who reunite on a summer camp vacation.

With Meyers he collaborated on Baby Boomthe two deliveries of Father of the Bridey Something’s Gotta Give.

We want to make a special mention of the dramatic comedy The Family Stone (2005), known in our region as The family jewelin which Keaton performs a the matriarch of a family who reunites with her close circle on her last Christmashaving as a background a great message of life and love. This particular film is part of the list of movies to see during the holidays for hundreds of movie buffsand seeing it again this year will definitely not be the same.

Diane Keaton, born Diane Hall on January 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, CA., found inspiration to become an actress through her mother, Dorothy: “I was 6 years old and I was watching my mom at the Highland Park Theater, which still exists, and I saw her win,” Keaton said.

After performing in productions at Santa Ana College and, a brief stay at USC, he moved to New York, where studied at The Neighborhood Playhouse and changed his last name to Keaton –her mother's maiden name– because another actress already had her name, Diane Hall.

His skill was not limited in front of the screen, because Keaton also tried his luck behind the scenes. In 1987 he directed the documentary Heaven, Unstrung Heroes (1995), and the comedy Hanging Up (2000). He also directed episodes of series such as China Beach, Twin Peaksy Pasadena.

Keaton had two children, his daughter Dexter and his son Duke, whom he adopted in 1996 and 2001respectively. She dated some of Hollywood's most famous actors, including Pacino and Beatty and filmmaker Allen. He never married, something he was grateful for, once telling People: “I'm so glad I didn't get married. I'm a weirdo.”

Keaton did what he wanted, he did everything. We will remember her for her immeasurable contribution to the film industry, and we will honor her by rewatching her films again and again.

Rest in peace, Diane Keaton.
