Chaat Masala is a classic North Indian seasoning known for its addictive tangy flavor. Often sprinkled over salads, fruits, fried snacks, and street foods, it balances sourness, spice, and a subtle sulfurous kick from black salt. This versatile spice mix is a staple in many Indian kitchens and is loved for adding instant flavor to everyday dishes.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds

  • 1 tbsp black salt

  • 1 tbsp dried mango powder (amchur)

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp red chili powder

  • 1 tsp dried mint leaves

  • ½ tsp ginger powder

  • ½ tsp asafoetida (hing)

  • 1 tsp regular salt (optional, to taste)

Directions

  • Heat a small dry pan over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and coriander seeds and dry roast for 2–3 minutes until fragrant.
  • Remove from heat and let them cool completely.
  • Grind the roasted spices into a fine powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
  • Add black salt, dried mango powder, black pepper, chili powder, dried mint, ginger powder, asafoetida, and regular salt.
  • Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  • Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
