Sam Raimi will be the director of Magic, a Lionsgate remake from the 1978 horror classic by Richard Attenborough, about a ventriloquist at the mercy of his uncontrollable and ruthless dummy, according to Deadline reports.

Raimi will extend his return as a director of a horror film, after this year he broke the 16-year drought without directing in genre cinema, with Send Help (2026), starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien.

The filmmaker will once again direct a script written by Mark Swift y Damian Shannonthe scriptwriters of the aforementioned Send Help. The duo also wrote the script for Freddy vs. Jasonand the reboot of Friday the 13th (2009).

Previously, Raimi had been chosen to produce the remake of Magicnow joining the work as director.

The original movie Magicbased on the novel by William Goldman, starred Anthony Hopkins as professional ventriloquist Charles “Corky” Withers, who succeeds in the world of magic thanks to the help of his foul-mouthed doll Fats (also voiced by Hopkins), whom Corky cannot control. Ann-Margret, Burgess Meredith and Ed Lauter were also part of the cast. The official synopsis tells us: “A ventriloquist is at the mercy of his ruthless dummy as he tries to rekindle the flame of romance with his high school girlfriend”.

Roy Lee (Weapons) will produce alongside Raimi, Chris Hammond, Tim Sullivan, and Zainab Azizi. Executive producers are Nathan Kahane, Paul Fishkin and Andrew Childs.

Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, had this to say about Raimi:

“Sam is the ideal director for this project; in fact, his incorporation represents one of the best combinations between director and material […] The script is fantastic, and we're so excited to see how Sam's direction and creative vision take it to the next level. “We are delighted that he has chosen to direct the film.”
