He horror continues to dominate the box office in the summer release season and making history.
The recently concluded weekend was the time for the long-awaited launch of Backroomsof Kane Parsons y A24which adapts to the cinema the viral Internet creepypasta phenomenon by Parsons himself, who, by the way, is making his debut as a feature film director, and at barely 20 years old, he becomes the youngest director of an A24 project. Parsons is also one of the members of a new generation of filmmakers emerging from YouTube.
The final figures for the premiere of Backrooms exceeded projections, recording a a staggering record of $81 million dollars, in 3,442 theaters in the United Statesduring its launch weekend.
Projections suggested that it would have a domestic box office opening between $40-$50 million dollars.
In the international box office recorded a premiere of $37 million dollarsfor a global total of $118 million dollars.
With a production budget of $10 million dollars, it is already one of the most profitable films of the year.
BOX OFFICE RECORDS IN ITS RELEASE
Parsons and A24's film set the following box office records:
- He achieved the best opening weekend ever for A24surpassing – and tripling – the record previously established by Civil War (2024) by Alex Garland for $25.5 million.
- He positioned himself as the best debut ever for an original horror film.
- It is the best opening for a director's debut film that is not part of a franchise.
- Parsons is the youngest director to have a film at number 1 at the box officebreaking the record previously set by Josh Trankwho was 27 years old when Chronicle (2012) premiered in first place at the national box office, with $22 million dollars.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT BACKROOMS?
With script Will Soodik (Ash vs Evil Dead, Westworld, Homeland), Backrooms It is set in the 90s, and follow Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a divorced man, a failed architect, frustrated and resentful of life, who works as the owner of a cheap furniture store. Clark goes to therapy with Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), to whom he talks about how his wife kicked him out of the house, and now he lives in the furniture store.
One night, the place experiences a lighting problem that takes Clark to the floor below where he will try to fix the problem, however, on one of the walls he notices a light that makes him approach and when he touches the wall, He finds a strange hidden door that he can pass through, which leads him to another dimension with a chilling atmosphere beyond reality.
Later, Dr. Mary will also enter this dimension in search of Clark, and two other young furniture workers (played by Lukita Maxwell y Find Bennett).

The film adapts the creepypasta that originated in 2019, with an image posted by an anonymous user on 4chan, based on the idea of accidentally and gradually disappearing from reality, in a network of seemingly empty rooms, only to discover that you are not alone. In 2022, the concept had new life when the premise was turned into a short film in found footage, by a then-16-year-old Parsons on his YouTube channel, Kane Pixels.
Parsons expanded the mythology of his short film with several videos published on the social network, accumulating millions of views, consolidating itself as a internet viral horror phenomenon.
They produce A24, Atomic Monster of James Wan, 21 Laps Entertainment of Shawn Levyy Chernin Entertainment. A24 and Chernin Entertainment are also co-financiers.
James Wan, Michael Clear, and Shawn Levy are producing alongside Robert Patino, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, and Chris Ferguson. Executive producers are Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, and Chris White.
The project went into production in Canada in the summer of 2025.
