The Australian filmmaker, George Millerdirector of the saga Mad Maxis developing plans to make one last film and television series Mad Maxbefore selling the rights to the post-apocalyptic franchise to the highest bidder.
Miller is currently offering the double project to different Hollywood studios.
According to reports from Puck, Miller has held meetings with major studios after Warner Bros.the original producer and distributor of Mad Maxrejected the opportunity to make both the film and the series. Universal Pictures, Amazon MGM Studios y Sony Pictures are among those interested.
WB has distributed the five films of Mad Max over the past 40 years, including the 2024 prequel, Furious, which, although it enjoyed a great reception from critics, did not perform well at the box office, grossing only $174 million against a budget of $168 million, meaning that the studio lost more than $100 million on the film, approximately.
If a final film is made, it is easy to believe that the plot would center on Max Rockatansky, although the idea that Tom Hardy reprise the role of Max after the troubled production of Mad Max: Fury Road seems unlikely. Maybe the role will be recast. A script, titled The Wastelandwas written in conjunction with Fury Road y Furiousand presumably it's the movie or series Miller now hopes to make.
In March 2025, he talked about having a script ready for an upcoming Mad Max. About this story, Miller said:
“We have another script. But because I've been doing this for so long that I'm used to telling stories, I find myself with too many stories, not just in my head, but in the form of scripts or at least very detailed notes that are within the reach of scripts. I'm a professional dreamer, actually. This was considered my big deficit when I was a kid: 'George would do better in school if he didn't dream so much' was on my report card.”
And he added:
“There are many stories. In fact, one of them is Mad Max. It's not something I would do next, because there are two things I would like to do next. But if for some reason the planets align, you can never know. Too often, you're standing in line to make a movie and suddenly something happens. Some things fit and some don't, so all I can say is we'll see.”
Mel Gibson starred in the original trilogy created by Miller and Byron Kennedy, which includes Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981) y Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Three decades later, Miller released the reboot Mad Max: Fury Roadstarring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. He is the road warrior and former slave, who helps Imperator Furiosa (Theron) escape with the five captive wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). The cast also included Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz and Courtney Eaton. In 2024 it was the turn of the prequel Furiousstarring Anya Taylor-Joy.
Miller, as is well known, owns the rights to Mad Max and clearly he wants to say goodbye on a high note, before handing over the beloved saga to a new manager.
