James Wan and Jason Blum talk about the PG-13 rating of ‘M3GAN’ – Cine3.com

It is common to see within the horror community, some resistance when a film in the genre obtains a PG-13 Rating, although many films of such a classification and genre have managed to scare audiences effectively, without having to resort to the R Rating. .

That seems to be the case for the new horror thriller M3GANproduced by Blumhouse Productions of Jason Blumand by James Wanwhich charges the PG-13 by: “Violent and scary content, some strong language and a suggestive reference.”

Opening in theaters in the United States for the January 6, 2023, Universal Pictures y Blumhouse Productions –in Mexico it premiered on December 29, 2022– news continues to emerge around the project directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), with a script written by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2), and original story by Cooper and Wan, whose plot revolves around an evolved android doll with malevolent intentions.

In an interview with THR, Blum and Wan talk about the film’s PG-13 rating, a rating that the creatives requested from the studio, with the aim of reaching a larger audience:

Blum: “Some of the scariest movies of all time are PG-13, so I don’t make too much of a stomach ache. Go see the movie and then tell me about it. (Laughter.)”

Wan: “Listen, I’ve done PG-13 movies and I’ve done R-rated movies. So I think it’s about what’s most suitable for the movie, and even though M3GAN is a scary movie, teenagers will love it. They will really like it, and I think it will speak to them in a big way.”

Blum: “Yes, that’s right. We wanted teens to be able to see the movie, ultimately.”

The film is starring Allison Williams (Get Out, The Perfection, Girls), playing Gemma, who takes over the care of Cady (Violet McGraw), his little 8-year-old niece, after the girl was orphaned. Gemma decides to take home the M3GAN prototype that she has been working on. The android doll forms a bond with Cady with terrifying consequences.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll programmed to be a child’s best companion and parent’s best ally. Designed by the brilliant toy company robotics Gemma (Allison Williams from Get Out), M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as she becomes a friend and teacher, playmate and protector, to the child she is attached to.

When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker for her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma is not sure or ready to be a mother. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to solve both problems, a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.

The cast completes it Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), y Stephanie Garneau-Monten (Straight Forward).

Blum and Wan produce the projectthe first with Blumhouse and the second with Atomic Monster. Michael Clear y Judson Scott from Atomic will serve as executive producers, along with Ryan Turek by Blumhouse, and the protagonist Williams.
