Balsamic Glaze

Balsamic glaze, also known as balsamic reduction, is a glossy, sweet-tart syrup made by slowly simmering balsamic vinegar until thickened. Its rich, complex flavor enhances dishes like Caprese salads, roasted vegetables, grilled meats, cheeses, and even desserts like fresh strawberries or vanilla ice cream.

This versatile condiment requires just one ingredient (plus optional sweeteners or herbs) and adds a gourmet touch to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar (high quality for best flavor)

  • 1–2 tbsp honey or brown sugar (optional, for sweetness)

  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary or thyme (optional, for infusion)

Directions

  • Pour balsamic vinegar into a small saucepan. Add honey or sugar (if using) and whisk to dissolve. For herbal notes, add rosemary or thyme.
  • Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a low simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Cook for 15–20 minutes, until the mixture thickens and reduces by half (about ⅓–½ cup total). It’s ready when it coats the back of a spoon without dripping quickly.
  • Remove from heat. Let cool 10 minutes (it will thicken further). Strain out herbs if used.
  • Transfer to a glass jar or bottle. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
