Fall-winter brings with it the strongest season of film releases for projects that will seek to be serious contenders for the Oscar Award.

On this occasion, one of the films that has given the most talk is The Whale of Darren Aronofsky y A24particularly for the interpretation of Brendan Fraser in the leading role. The actor is already emerging as one of the favorites to land an Oscar nomination in 2023 for best actor

Like every year, the Oscars are the final destination of an awards season that is about to start shortly. At the multiple stops are the Golden Globesawards that after not being broadcast in 2022, will resume their regular broadcast on NBC in 2023.

But Fraser has a message for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA): of being nominated for the Golden Globe, will not attend the ceremonyfollowing the accusation made against Philip Berk, former president and member of the HFPA, for groping him at a 2003 dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The actor revealed the alleged assault in an interview with GQ in 2018.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Fraser comments on the 2023 Golden Globes:

I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I respect the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.. No, I’m not going to participate… It’s because of the history I have with them. And my mother did not raise a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not that”.

The Berk incident caused Fraser to distance himself from Hollywood, as well as making him feel as if “something had been taken from me.” Following Fraser’s accusation in 2018, the HFPA said in a statement that she “strongly opposes sexual harassment.” The organization also opened an investigation into the matter, which GQ reports ended with the HFPA’s proposal that Fraser sign a joint statement that read: “Although Mr. Berk was found to have inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that he intended it to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.” Fraser refused to sign, and Berk remained a voting member of the HFPA.

Berk was expelled from the HFPA in 2021 after he sent an email to members of the organization calling the Black Lives Matter movement “a hateful racist movement.” Previously, an LA Times publication had revealed that the HFPA had no members of color.

Fraser said he is willing to reconsider his relationship with the HFPA and the Golden Globes until the organization wants to make amends.

A24 will premiere The Whale in theaters December 9, 2022.
