A24 marketing campaign starts Tonya film project about the famed chef, cookbook author, and travel and gastronomy presenter, Anthony Bourdainwho died by suicide in June 2018.
Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t) plays Bourdain in the film directed by Matt Johnson (Nirvana: The Band – The Show – The Movie, BlackBerry), and script written by Johnson, Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels y Lou Howe.
The main cast also includes Antonio Banderas (Babygirl), Leo Woodall (The White Lotus), Emilia Jones (The Running Man, CODA) y Stavros Halkias (Bugonia).
The story takes place in the summer of 1975when a 19-year-old Bourdain travels to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he finds work at a local restaurant and, in turn, inspiration and purpose in life thanks, of course, to the food, as well as the people around him.
EW media debuts the first official looks at Tonyin a report in which director Johnson explains having considered making a film about Bourdain, focused on his younger years, when he discovered his entry into the kitchen and a new path in life, commenting that Bourdain's memoirs published in 2000, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, opened the doors to the story:
“Those two chapters of Kitchen Confidential They seemed like Genesis to me. Very little happens, but the details are packed with information. “That meant the cast and I were able to investigate this man's origins together, knowing only where he would end up 20 years later.”
Sessa joins the conversation, saying:
“Bourdain never wanted to feel like the smartest person in the room. He had an unwavering desire to learn everything possible about the world and the people around him. The rules by which his life was governed were the result of feeling a responsibility towards the people around him in the kitchen from a young age, in addition to screwing up… many times.”
Sessa's culinary experience was a factor in his favor. The actor shares:
“I had worked in a bakery for several years, so I guess it was a similar environment to the kitchen on set. I learned a lot about seafood, particularly the dishes served on Cape Cod. I'm sure someone got zinc poisoning from the amount of oysters we ate.”
The film project is supported by Bourdain's estate, which is managed primarily by his ex-wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain, named executor of his will and trustee of his minor daughter. In a press release they stated about the A24 film:
“Anthony Bourdain's legacy is significant to millions of people. He was a man who valued authenticity above all else and would have been both moved and bewildered by the world's curiosity about his life.
We decided to support “Tony” because it is not a conventional biography and does not attempt to summarize a life. Guided by the vision of director Matt Johnson, the film portrays a transformative summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It's an interpretation, as that part of Tony's life will always remain somewhat unknown.
We appreciate Tony's portrayal of complexity, his intellectual desire and his convictionqualities that ultimately led him to travel the world and endeared him to so many. We hope this film serves as a reminder that every journey has a beginning., and for the public to see the beginnings of the man who taught us to be better explorers in our own paths”.
The producers of the feature film are Trevor White, Tim White, and Matthew Miller. Executive producers are Amy Greene, Emily Rose, and Chris Stinson.
A24 will premiere Tony in theaters August 26.
