Ridley Scott and Paramount Pictures have a sequel in the works of the acclaimed Gladiatorwhich even without a confirmed official title, is referred to as Gladiator 2.
The project announced two big signings this week: first, it was announced that Barry Keoghan, fresh from his 2023 Oscar nomination, is in talks to join the ranks of the cast in an antagonistic role. The second signing is that of the Oscar winner Denzel Washingtonmarking a new collaboration with Scott, after having placed himself under the filmmaker’s orders in the 2007 film, American Gangster (via THR).
Keoghan and Washington would join Paul Mescal (After sun, Lost Daughter, Normal People), previously confirmed for the starring role.
Gladiator Scott’s (2000) Oscar-winning best film followed the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a former general forced to be a common gladiator under the rule of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), a patricidal self-proclaimed emperor. from Rome.
Set years after the events of the original film, “the sequel’s story will center on Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Commodus from Phoenix.”
Also recently nominated for an Oscar, Mescal, will play the adult version of Lucius (in the original film he was played by Spencer Treat Clark). Keoghan would play the Roman Emperor Geta, a fictional version of the real-life ruler.
As we mentioned, Keoghan is coming off his first Oscar nomination for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. Other of her credits include The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Eternals, Dunkirk, The Green Knightand a cameo in The Batman Matt Reeves as the Joker.

Scott will direct and produce the sequel.. Michael Pruss is another of the producers, along with Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are the executive producers.
Several members of the team behind the scenes of the original film resume their work in the sequel, such is the case of John Matieson, director of photography, likewise Arthur Max and Janty Yates resume their work in production design and costume design, respectively. .

Paramount set the release date for Gladiator 2 by November 22, 2024. Scott has been developing the sequel for years.
