Jazz and happy? Why not. There are always exciting connections between electronic and improvised music. A few of them can be experienced at this year’s Leipzig Jazz Days. We’re giving away tickets.

The Leipzig Jazz Days are taking place for the 47th time this year – the festival is definitely an instance in the international jazz calendar. It’s not the first time that the program curators have put out feelers towards electronics. I remember collaborations with Conne Island, among others.

In 2023, the Leipzig Jazz Days will have the theme “Make the connection – and act with care”. It is a plea for curiosity about the unknown and unfamiliar and for more empathy towards others. The accompanying text says:

“With this year’s edition of the festival, we have invited musicians who dare to cross borders and cover great distances in their interpersonal encounters: stylistically, disciplinary, culturally, politically, geographically. Musicians who empathically turn to their environment, connect with the past and tradition, explore the origins of their identity, but are also located in the present and develop visions of the future, each of which has its own story to tell.”

From October 14th to 21st, 2023, more than 100 musicians will play in various clubs and locations – international stars, but also innovative insider tips. We would particularly like to recommend three concert evenings at the Leipzig Jazz Days to you – because there are also connections to electronics.

October 17 // UT Connewitz // 9 p.m

Double concert with the Joana Duda Trio and Roher/Loderbauer/Westerhus/Freund.

While the Polish pianist lets acoustic instruments move freely with her own electronic samples and sounds, the other quartet around the Berlin legends Max Loderbauer and Tobias Freund goes on a dark, repetitive, percussive journey.

Yes Yeah? We are giving away 2×2 tickets for this evening. Please send an email to dance @ gladfroh.de by October 14th, 2023 with the subject “Jazz Days October 17th.”

October 19th // Schaubühne Lindenfels // 9:30 p.m

Double concert with STAX and SUM.

The international quartet STAX around Leipzig drummer Max Stadtfeld creates a contemplative stream of organic and subtly electronic sounds. SUM, on the other hand, is a performance duo with connections to film and media art, where powerful beats meet intense moments of improvisation and an experimental trumpet.

October 21st // Plant 2 // 11 p.m

Triple concert with Gorz, Hjirok and Marie Tjong-Ayong.

At the end of the 47th Leipzig Jazz Days, things get clubby again with a breaky DJ set by Marie Tjong-Ayong. Before that, Gorz fully immersed themselves in the world of free jazz improvisation. And Hjirok goes on a search for transcendent Kurdish sounds together with Andi Toma from Mouse On Mars. But unfortunately he is ill, so Siamand Mohammadi will be performing on synths.

Do you want to be there? We are giving away 2×2 tickets for this evening. Please send an email to dance @ gladfroh.de by October 14th, 2023 with the subject “Jazz Days October 21st.”
