Meryl Streep, Anne Hathawayand the director David Frankel They praise the improvised cameo of Lady Gaga in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
If you have been closely following the news about the long-awaited sequel, you will be aware that the versatile artist made a cameo for the new installment, in addition to composing and performing three original musical songs for the soundtrack.
And in case you haven't seen The Devil Wears Prada 2we warn you: from this point we will talk with spoilers about Gaga's participation.
In a recent interview with EW, Streep, Hathaway and Frankel discussed Gaga's appearance in a two-part cameo. First he shares the scene with Streep, in a scripted confrontation between the feared editor of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly (Streep) and a fictional version of Gaga herself, to later go on stage during a fashion show, and perform one of the three original songs, titled “Shape of a Woman”.
The dynamic between Gaga and Streep is built on a joke mentioned earlier in the film, where Priestly and her Runway team are looking for a singer for a musical number during the fashion show in Milan, and where Miranda refuses to speak to “her” to ask for the favor.
Three-time Oscar winner Streep explains about the sequence:
“We had a lot of improvisationsand again, it could have been a pretty long scene, because she [en personaje] He was very unpleasant to me and I [en personaje] “I was unusually kind to her.”
“It was fun. It is divine. I admire her as a musician, as a writer, as an actress. Does the movie [de House of] Gucci? How great it was! “I loved her, and she was a good girl for coming to do this for us.”
Hathaway joins the conversation and praises Gaga saying:
“He cared a lot about the film. There was no 'You just have one take and then I'm gone.'”.
Both actresses praise Gaga for having composed “Shape of a Woman” for the movie:
“We could hear it warm up, we could hear the full acoustics,” Hathaway says about filming the performance scene, while Streep praised the “beautiful instrument” of Gaga's voice.
Gaga's cameo was born from two lines in the script of Aline Brosh McKennawhere they talk about “a pop star who makes a presentation”, which for both McKenna and the director, Frankel, could not be anyone other than Gaga.
Frankel explains:
“It's literally two lines in the script. The studio said: 'The script is so good, we really need a pop star, There's probably only one pop star that makes sense to us: If you get Gaga'“.
And how did they get Gaga, who was in the middle of a world tour lasting more than a year? For those not in the know, this is where it comes in the power of the legendary Streep.
Streep, who had met Gaga during the filming of the TV special, SNL 50called her to invite her to be part of the project, to which Gaga without thinking twice said “Yeah!”. During Streep's appearance and Emily Blunton the British morning show Heart Breakfast, told how it happened:
“It was me. Thank you. You are welcome” she told Blunt, who seemed surprised to learn how it happened. “I called her from Islington because I was having dinner with Tracy. And I thought, 'Why not try it?‘”
“I just said, 'Would you do it? Because it's going to be great.' And she said, 'Yes!'”Streep said, snapping her fingers. “Just like that,” and continue, “I was on a world tour, which lasted a year, playing for 75,000 people in stadiums, and he flew out and did this for us.”.

In the interview with EW, Frankel later recalls:
“We sent him the script and, luckily, he loved it. He wrote a couple of songs for us, which was great. We wanted her to appear in the movie as well, so Aline wrote a scene for her. She's a great actress, and she and Meryl had instant comedic chemistry.”.
The director also confirms that Gaga improvised her last phrase in the cameoin which he turns to his assistant and grumbles: “Who let her in here?” referring to Miranda's presence.
“It's complicated, because that scene was filmed in one take, so the timing had to be impeccable, and it was.”, concludes the director.
Gaga, who won the Oscar for composing Shallow to A Star Is Born (2018), composed for The Devil Wears Prada 2 the three original songs: Shape of a Woman, Glamorous Lifeand the main theme, Runwaywho performs a duet with Doechii.
The original soundtrack is now available on all platforms. The Devil Wears Prada 2 now in theaters around the world.
