During the morning of Tuesday, January 23, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) revealed the nominations al Oscar Award 2024which resulted in Oppenheimer as the most nominated film with 13 nominations, and Poor Things behind with 11.
The phenomenon movie of 2023, Barbie, got 8 nominationsincluding Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling) and Supporting Actress (America Ferrera). From the announcement of the nominations, it was highlighted that the Oscar Academy did not nominate Greta Gerwig in the Best Director category, nor Margot Robbie for Best Actress, two categories in which Gerwig and Robbie have been nominated in the awards that precede the Oscar. Most award-winning analysts had projected that Gerwig and Robbie would be nominated. Robbie was nominated as producer of Barbie in the Best Picture category, while Gerwig received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
But its omissions in the categories for director and actress in a leading role did not leave anyone indifferent. Social networks were immediately flooded with opinions about this decision, and even members of the industry have been surprised by the lack of nominations for Gerwig and Robbie.
One of those who have spoken publicly about it is Gosling, nominated for his portrayal of Ken in Gerwig and Robbie's film. The actor issued the following statement to the media:
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my peers alongside such notable artists in a year of so many wonderful films. And I never thought I'd say this, but I'm also incredibly honored and proud that it's for playing a plastic doll named Ken.”
“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no 'Barbie' movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film.“.
“No recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without his talent, courage and genius. To say I'm disappointed they weren't nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement..”
“Against all odds, with nothing more than a pair of soulless, scantily clad, and fortunately crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, propelled culture, and made history.. His work should be recognized alongside that of other very deserving nominees. That being said, I am so happy for América Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed her talents to make this such a groundbreaking film.”
Other nominations for Barbie include costume design, production design and two original songs (“I'm Just Ken”, and “What Was I Made For?”).
Gosling is nominated for best supporting actor alongside Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).
This is Gosling's third Oscar nomination. He was previously nominated for Half Nelson (2006) y La La Land (2016).
