after he Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) give the green light to a strike, which entered into force on the morning of this Friday, July 14, 2023after the deadline for negotiations between the union and the Film and Television Producers Alliance (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers; AMPTP) without reaching a contractual agreement, SAG member actors have been speaking out on social media to express their support for their union and commit to the cause.

Actors Guild members join the Writers Guild (WGA) strike that entered into force on May 2, 2023. As of this Friday, the actors joined the writers, to go on strike for fair compensation, and began picketing in the vicinity of Netflix, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, and finally, Disney.

This makes it a “double strike,” something that hasn’t happened since 1960. The WGA has been on strike since May 2.

GEORGE CLOONEY:

“This is a turning point in our industry. Actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to earn a living. For our industry to survive, that has to change. For actors, that journey begins now” (via Variety).

JAMIE LEE CURTIS:

“Looks like it’s time to remove the MASKS. And pick up the SIGNS” (via Instagram).

BOB ODENKIRK:

In response to a tweet posted by Fran DrescherPresident of SAG-AFTRA:

“My God. Come on Fran, come on! This was a powerful statement. I’m with Fran and everyone at SAG and WGA in this extended time… going forward.”

The Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad actor responded to Drescher’s following statement about the AMPTP: “How they claim poverty and that they are losing money left and right when they give $100 million to their CEOs. If we don’t stand our ground right now, we’re all going to be in danger of being replaced by machines.”.

CYNTHIA NIXON:

“The @sagaftra strike has finally arrived. I’m proud to stand with @WGAWest and @WGAEast as the actors and writers together demand their fair share of the record-breaking profits studios have been reaping from our work for far too long. We will win this!”

YVETTE NICOLE BROWN:

“We will join the WGA on the pickets starting tomorrow. We all got together last week to create our signs. I was in sticks! When you’re out there without a splinter thanks to duct tape, think of your girl!”

JOSH GAD:

“Very proud and impressed by @sagaftra and @frandrescher at this time in this press. #sagaftrastrong.”

The SAG is made up of 160,000 people and is directed by the president Fran Drescherwho in a press conference during the announcement of the strike on Thursday, Drescher said:

“SAG-AFTRA negotiated in good faith and was eager to reach an agreement that sufficiently addressed the needs of artists, but the AMPTP responses to the union’s larger proposals have been insulting and disrespectful of our massive contributions to this industry.”

“Businesses have refused to engage meaningfully on some issues and on others they have blocked us outright. Until they negotiate in good faith, we cannot begin to reach an agreement.”

SAG-AFTRA is looking for a residual streaming formula that would compensate actors based on the success of the series. The Union is also calling for regulations on the use of artificial intelligence, as well as limits on self-recorded auditions.
