Sony Pictures' Screen Gems wants more scares.
With the first anniversary of the theatrical release of the slasher rom-com Heart Eyes of the director Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within, Scare Me), approaching, Dread Central reveals that it has become the development of Heart Eyes 2with the other good news being that the script is already completed. Apparently, the script was written by Ruben himself. The first film was written by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky, Drop) y Michael Kennedy (Freaky).
At the moment the details of the plot are unknown, nor when production will begin. The studio has not officially announced the announcement of a sequel.
In Heart Eyes (2025), a masked maniac with glowing red eyes, nicknamed the Heart Eyes Killer, returns every Valentine's Day to slaughter unsuspecting couples. When a cynical advertising executive and her hopeless romantic colleague become the next target, they decide to fight back and end the reign of terror, spending the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. It was starred by Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer) y Mason Gooding (Scream 5, Scream VI, Scream 7).
Prior to the release of the first film, Ruben shared that he was excited to tackle his favorite genres:
“My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I'm very excited to put on my most challenging genre switch to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic romantic comedy universe.”
In addition, he explained how a sequel would be possible:
“I'll put it this way: You could replicate the structure of any great romantic comedy, from His Girl Friday until Defending Your Lifeand you could put Heart Eyes at the center of that story, and have him glow and attack. That's what's exciting about this: There's a chance that whoever the filmmaker was — I'd certainly be interested — could actually try to create or replicate that romantic comedy, or the feeling of Bridget Jones o Love Actually or whatever, but that these people feel really terrified by this psychopathic killer.”
The launch of Heart Eyes in theaters, it had a rare achievement for the slasher genre.
The film debuted at number 2 at the national box office with $8.3 million, and in its second weekend it increased its box office, accumulating another $10 million at the national box office.
This marked the third-smallest second-week drop in theaters for the horror genre, of all time, placing behind Terrifier 2 (+28%), and the iconic 1996 slasher, Scream (+42%).
Generally, slasher films suffer dramatic drops in their second weekends in theaters, with a few exceptions such as the three cases cited above.
It ended its run in theaters, grossing $33 million dollars at the global box office, and leaving a good taste in the audience's mouths, with a story that leaves the doors open for a sequel if the studios so decide.
Spyglass Media Group (Scream 5, Scream VI, Scream 7) produced the film, distributed theatrically by Sony Pictures.
