The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), organization in charge of delivering the Oscar Awardshas announced a blunt decision: will stop presenting screenings/features of nominated films.

The announcement, obtained by THR, was revealed in the January Academy Bulletin, sent to members of said organization.

According to the outlet, in recent days, some members attempted to mobilize others to join them in a protest.

WHAT ARE THESE PROJECTIONS ABOUT?

AMPAS has long held screenings of Oscar contenders for its members. Such functions take place throughout the year in key locations such as Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York, London. It was since the rise of the Academy's own streaming service, the Academy Screening Room, with which members have the possibility of watching films from home, that member attendance at screenings has decreased significantly.

In the Academy Bulletin it is explained:

“An average of five members attended these screenings over the past two years.”

The screenings reportedly cost thousands of dollars each, which is the main reason why the Academy decided to save resources by eliminating them completely.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Some members are unhappy with the Academy requiring its members to catch up on films they missed during the run-up to the nominations, on the small screen, during the post-nominations period.
  • Some members insist that nominated films like Frankenstein y Avatar: Fire and Ashcannot be adequately evaluated by viewing them from home.
  • For its part, the Academy responds that its members had many opportunities to see those films on the big screen before the nominations.
  • These opportunities are not only the official screenings of the Academy or commercial cinemas, but also the screenings of the FYC campaign (For Your Consideration) carried out by the studios themselves in favor of the films that they wish to submit as possible candidates for a nomination.
