New series of Ryan Murphynew controversy.

It seems like every time a Murphy television production is released, it makes headlines for the most scandalous reasons. It happened recently with Monster: The Ed Gein Storyprior to that it was for the same Netflix anthology series in the season focused on the Menéndez brothers, and before that, for the one focused on Jeffrey Dahmer.

Now he is changing house, collaborating with FX for his most recent miniseries Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessettebut controversy follows.

Love Story explores the history of the courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. y Carolyn Bessetteincluding their tragic deaths in a plane crash in July 1999.

And if anything has been a source of criticism in Murphy's latest television productions, it is the creative freedom taken when portraying figures and eventscreating a sense of altered reality for the audienceand creating discomfort among those involved and/or close to the events that occurred. Love Story is not the exception.

This leads us to Daryl Hannah.

The actress goes all out against Murphy and FX's miniseries in an essay published by the New York Times, called “How Can 'Love Story' Get Away With This?” (“How can 'Love Story' get away with this?”), particularly for her portrayal as the “villain” of the romance between JFK Jr. and Bessette, in addition to painting her as a cocaine addict, desecrator of family heirlooms, and attending funerals she was not required to attend.

Hannah, who dated Kennedy for five years in the early '90s, writes that the character “Daryl Hannah” on the series, played by Dr. Hemingwayis designed to be an “adversary” who threatens the romantic narrative between the two main characters, and qualifies Love Story like a “TV series that exploits tragedy”.

“The decision to portray Hannah as irritating, self-centered, complaining and inappropriate was no accident. Storytelling requires tension. It often requires an obstacle. But a real, living person is not a narrative device. This thought also has a gender dimension. Popular culture has long elevated certain women by portraying others as rivals, obstacles, or villains. Isn't it classic misogyny to denigrate one woman to elevate another?”, writes the actress.

Hannah says that in the weeks since the series began airing, she has received “many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the depiction is truthful. When entertainment borrows a real person's name,” he continues, “can permanently affect your reputation”.

Hannah points out other false and incorrect details portrayed in the series:

“The character 'Daryl Hannah' portrayed in the series does not even remotely represent my life, my behavior, or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are false. I have never used cocaine in my life nor have I organized parties with cocaine. I have never pressured anyone to get married. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or invaded anyone's private funeral. I have never disclosed any story in the press. I never compared the death of Jacqueline Onassis to that of a dog. It horrifies me to have to defend myself against a television program. They are not creative ornaments of personality. They are statements about behavior, and they are false”.

As context to whoever is not watching Love StoryHannah's character invites some drug-addicted friends to the heirloom-filled Tribeca loft she shares with Kennedy, and later shows up uninvited to Kennedy's funeral. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassiswhich occurred in May 1994.

“I know that as an actress, I will be in the public eye,” Hannah writes. “I have endured many outrageous lies, horrible stories and unflattering characterizations. I decided not to fight them, but to focus on my work and respect my loved ones by keeping my personal life private. But My silence should not be confused with agreeing with the lies. Apparently my discretion makes me an easy target”.

Continues:

“The Kennedy family is also notoriously private, and I have always respected their right to privacy.”. Know that most (if not all) of those who claim to have any intimate knowledge of our personal lives are self-serving sensationalists who engage in gossip.insinuations and speculations. Many people believe what they see on television and do not distinguish between dramatization and documented facts, and the impact is not abstract. In the digital age, entertainment often becomes collective memory. Real names are not fictional tools. They belong to real lives”.
