Despite what algorithms tend to show, music from Eastern Europe – especially from Russia – does not live solely on post-punk/goth and the like. Just leave your laziness aside, get out of the suggestions pushed by the apps and look, there is a sea of good sounds coming from there and today I'm putting on the table one of this vintage's favorites when it comes to shoegaze, Aerofall (or AEROFALL, like that) in capital letters).
The band from the city of Rostov-on-Don was formed sometime at the beginning of the last decade by Yana Komeshko and Vladimir Karpov and as a quartet in 2013 they played alongside A Place to Bury Strangers and Soviet Soviet; the following year the first and eponymous album came, in 2017 they released Forms that next to the beautiful Radiogaze of Blankenberge – which will soon dock here – has once again put the Russian gazers in the spotlight (again because before there was the Pinkshinyultrablast).
Well, after a long 5 years since then, including pandemics, wars, changes in training and scams, last year Aerofall brought its youngest son into the world, Rh, distributed by the Japanese label Hands and Moments. The 8-track album maintains two of the group's characteristics: not overextending their work and playing shoegaze with a more accelerated feel; vocals and guitars are melting, but the tempo of the songs is more like My Bloody Valentine of Isn’t anything what of Lovelessusing of course the most obvious parameter for comparison.
Will it change your life? No! But if you, like me, don't get tired of looking at the shoes, they will certainly leave you with a big smile on your face. Press play, turn up the volume and top up, tovarisch.
