After four weeks in theaters, Disney is “hanging up its boots” with The Marvelssequel to Captain Marvel (2019). The 33rd MCU film exposed what seems like an apparent truth: Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe was no longer bulletproof.
Upon its release on the big screen on December 9, the film recorded a debut of $47 million at the domestic box office, thus obtaining the worst debut in the history of the MCU at the US box office. At the global box office it accumulated a premiere of $110 million. By MCU standards it is a disappointing box office.
Now The Marvels is setting a new recordand unfortunately, it is a negative record: the lowest-grossing film in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with $80 million in the US, and $197 million worldwide. And its run in theaters has not officially ended. It has been on display for four weeks, and is expected to continue in theaters until after the new year, a typical season for audiences to flock to theaters, but not even Disney has expectations of that happening as it revealed that it will stop showing report weekly income The Marvels.
In a statement to the press, Disney said (via Variety):
“Now that the box office for 'The Marvels' is coming to an end, we will stop reporting weekend international/global grosses for this title.”
The cost of production of The Marvels was $220 million and another $100 million in marketing costs.
The good news is for The Incredible Hulk (2008) which will no longer be the MCU's lowest-grossing film. This film ended its run in theaters with $264 million. The Marvels It is the first MCU film to not exceed $100 million in the national box office.
The big screen superhero genre (MCU and DCU) has been showing signs of fatigue among audiences in recent years. Even so, the other two MCU premieres of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106 mdd) y Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118 million), achieved a triple-digit debut. Quantum It ended with a global box office of $476 million, and is considered a box office failure of the MCU.
The sequel directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) with script written by DaCosta, Megan McDonnell (WandaVision) y Elissa Karasik (Loki, Lessons in Chemistry, WeCrashed), brings the return of Brie Larson as the superheroine/Carol Danvers, who must team up with Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan from the series Ms. Marvely Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau from the series WandaVisionto deal with Zawe Ashtonas the Kree warrior, Dar-Benn, one of Carol Danvers' many adversaries. Samuel L. Jackson returns as Nick Fury, and the South Korean actor Park Seo-joonjoins the MCU as the prince of the planet Aladna, Yan D'Aladna.
The plot begins after the events shown in the post-credits scene of the series. Ms. Marvel.
