Three weeks after premiering season 20, ABC announces that has renewed the veteran medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to a season 21.
Grey’s is averaging 3.5 million viewers in its new season, which airs new episodes every Thursday. This is an improvement in ratings compared to season 19.
- Grey’s airs on Thursdays after 9-1-1a series sold by Fox to ABC at the end of the previous season.
- 9-1-1 took over the schedule that previously belonged to Station 19which is now broadcast after Grey’s.
With the renewal to season 21, Grey’s Extends record as longest-running primetime medical dramaa record that was originally obtained in 2019.
The series created by Shonda Rhimes was an immediate hit upon its debut on ABC in 2005. In the decades since, it has withstood countless personnel changes, both in front of the screen and behind the scenes.
About the renewal, Rhimes said in a statement to the media (via Variety):
“The loyalty and love of 'Grey's Anatomy' fans has propelled us to a historic 21st season, and I couldn't be more grateful. Meg Marinis' storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive. and I can't wait to see what he has in store for next season.”
In season 19, the protagonist Ellen Pompeo He left the series in a regular role, leaving Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) as the only original members still in the cast. The end of Season 19 also marked the departure of showrunner Krista Vernoff, who handed the reins to executive producer Meg Marinis for Season 20.
Pompeo still participates in the series in a guest star role, in addition to being one of the producers. Rhimes executive produces alongside Betsy Beers, Marinis, Vernoff, Mark Gordon, Debbie Allen and Zoanne Clack.
