With a premiere scheduled for August of this year, Netflix debuted on first official trailer from the science fiction thriller, The Last Housefrom the director Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, Lupin).
The feature film, starring Greta Lee (Past Lives, The Morning Show) y Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent, Civil War), turns a family's home into a nightmare.
With script written by Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters), the plot focuses on a family that is confined to their house, unable to leave, in an inexplicable situation. As supplies dwindle, they must learn to be resourceful to survive and unravel the mysterious force trapping them.
Lee and Moura play Ann and Jason, the parents of a family with two children.
The rest of the cast includes Riley Chung (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Emma Ho (The Bake), Noah Alexander Sosnowski (Section 8), y Gabriel Barbosa (May December).
Leterrier previously explained to Tudum about his project:
“The Last House challenges the idea of āāa safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity. It is an ordinary family's worst nightmare, pushing them to the limit to protect each other and exposing the fragility of safety, as well as the desperate fight to regain it.”
Lee added:
“Growing up, my favorite things to watch and read were survival stories with an original twist. So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie raises about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited by the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.”
“Ann is a fundamental pillar. I am very lucky to have been able to be inspired by all the women in my life who are the breadwinners of their respective families. She has an unwavering and selfless strength that endures even in the most difficult moments. She is the personification of superhuman strength, that phenomenon in which a normal person, in this case, an ordinary mother, can unleash an extraordinary surge of physical and emotional strength in the face of extreme stress or danger. And all for love. That is the āAnnās superpower, like that of so many other mothers I know.ā
Netflix anticipates that the house itself is like a main character in the film. Production design was provided by veteran Kevin Jenkins, who built a house with greater details, such as how household items, from appliances to toys, deteriorate as time passes in isolation. In addition, the use of an “analog route” is highlighted whenever there was an opportunity, with the first half of the film shot on 35mm film, and practical effects as much as possible.
“I grew up on Steven Spielberg movies,” Leterrier says. “The Amblin movies, where the houses were shot on location. There was this texture that made them feel quite identifiable. That was the idea.”
Producers are Leterrier, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Kori Adelson, and Oly Obst. Executive producers include Thomas Benksi, Cecile Gaget, Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, Damian Anderson.
Netflix estrena The Last House August 7 all over the world.
