Last July, the Uruguayan-born filmmaker, Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead), announced the conclusion of filming of the new installment of the science fiction saga, Alienwhich was carried out under the provisional title Alien: Romulus.

Since then, Álvarez has been working on the post-production of the film, which is scheduled for release theatrical release for August 2024.

Álvarez co-wrote the script with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (remake Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe, Don’t Breathe 2remake Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and produced the feature film in the company of Ridley Scottdirector of the original 1979 classic, and the prequels Prometheus y Alien: Covenant.

The most recent news is announced by the filmmaker himself, who during his presentation at the Latin summit of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) told Guillermo del Toro that he had completed his Director’s Cut, which was already seen by Ridley himself. Scott (via avpgalaxynews):

I finished the director’s cut a week ago and had to go through the incredibly tense process of obviously sending it to Ridley. He wanted me to see it before anyone else.. And everyone warned me that Ridley is really tough. It’s really tough, especially if it has anything to do with his movies. “He was very hard on Blade Runner, which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had problems with it because it’s very difficult for him because it’s his work.”

“I drove there. I see his executives, who couldn’t see it with him, because he wanted to see it alone. Because he was Alien. It was very important to him. He didn’t want to have anyone in the room. That terrifies me even more as I wait.”

And then he enters the room and does say ‘Fede, what can I tell you? It’s fucking great.’ For me it was like… ahhh… My family knows that it was one of the best moments of my life to have a teacher like him, who I admired so much, even watch a film that I made but particularly something like this… and have him talk to me for an hour about what he liked about her.”

Ridley Scott directed the original 1979 classic, and later returned to direct the prequels Prometheusy Alien: Covenant. He now remains a producer with his company Scott Free. Michael A. Pruss is another producer, with Elizabeth Cantillon, Tom Moran, Brent O’Connor serving as executive producers.

Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, The Craft: Legacy, Mare of Easttown, Devs) leads the cast in the leading role, with Isabela Merced (Instant Family, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Sweet Girl), David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearny Aileen Wu.

The project is described as “an original independent feature film,” which is expected to include the appearance of the Xenomorph aliens. The film will be a reboot of the science fiction and horror franchise.

The following was previously announced about the new film:

“Plot details are being held in a cryogenic chamber, but unlike the other films that focused on adults in corporate, military and scientific roles, this ninth installment of the franchise will focus on a group of young people.”

In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe..”

Alien by Álvarez will be released in theaters on August 16, 2024 via 20th Century Studios. This will be the first installment of the Alien saga to be distributed by Disney.
