Ingredients
4 tablespoons of butter
4 tablespoons wheat flour
4 cups of milk
Salt and pepper to taste
A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Directions
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat until completely melted.
- Add the flour to the melted butter and stir well with a wire whisk or a wooden spoon.
Cook the mixture for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent the flour from burning.
This is known as making a roux, which will be the base for the sauce to thicken. - Reduce the heat to medium and start gradually adding the milk to the roux mixture.
Add approximately 1/2 cup of milk at a time, stirring well after each addition to prevent lumps from forming. - Continue cooking the sauce, stirring constantly, until it thickens and reaches the desired consistency.
The white sauce should be creamy and coat the back of a spoon when ready. - Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
Nutmeg adds subtle flavor but is optional. - Remove the sauce from the heat and it will be ready to be used in assembling the lasagna.
