From the announcement of the reboot, to the release of its first image, the new version of The Crow from the director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Hunstman, Ghost in the Shell) y Lionsgate, has given a lot to talk about. And we are sure that with the premiere of the first trailer this morning, the conversation on social networks will continue.
The studio released the official trailer for the reboot The Ravendescribed as a modern reimagining of James O'Barr's graphic novel, starring Bill Skarsgård (saga IT, Barbarian) as Eric Draven, the singer and songwriter, FKA Twigs (Honeyboy) as Shelly Webster, Draven's fiancée, and Danny Huston (Succession) in an antagonistic role.
The trailer, which you find at the end of this note along with the first promotional poster, offers a look at Eric Draven's bloody revenge motivated by “true love.”
The plot centers on Eric Draven (Skarsgård), who the night before his wedding, is murdered along with his fiancée (Twigs) by members of a violent gang. On the anniversary of his death, Eric is resurrected and sets out to find his killers and avenge the murder of his fiancée, with the help of a mystical bird.
The rest of the cast is made up Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), y Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
Skarsgård said in a new statement to the media the following:
“I was a big fan of the original film as a child and it was a great honor to take on the role of Eric Draven. But what really attracted me was what Rupert Sanders wanted to do with it. I wanted to completely reimagine the story and character and adapt them for a modern audience. He is a character that I know many revere and with whom I have a strong connection; He is unlike any he has taken on before. Working with the extraordinarily talented FKA Twigs was magical. I felt a responsibility to Eric's story and strove to stay true to the spirit of the source material; I can't wait for the world to see the film and I hope it resonates with audiences as strongly as it did with us.”
James O'Barr's material was previously adapted to the big screen, in the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee, in which it would mark his last role, after he died after being accidentally shot while filming a scene for the film.
- The Crow (1994) by Alex Proyas, is considered a cult classic, often remembered for its dark and brooding aesthetic, and alternative rock soundtrack. The film had three sequels and a television series.
Sanders considers the reboot a tribute of sorts to Lee's memory:
“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it's definitely something we've always had in mind during the making of the film. Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he's proud of what we've done and how we've brought back history. His soul is very alive in this film. There's a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Raven, and I think Bill feels like a successor to that.”.
And adds:
“What attracted me to this was the opportunity to do a dark romance, something that was about loss and grief and the ethereal veil between life and death and overcome that. Look, I grew up listening to Joy Division and the Cure, and “This movie is a bit like a Cure song: the beauty of melancholy.”
Lionsgate will release the reboot of The Crow in theaters on June 7, 2024.
