I will not die of love (Marta Matute, 2026)

Marta Matute joins the splendid batch of women directors who, in recent seasons, are releasing some very mature and reliable first films. In this case, he has dared to create a very difficult family story focused on how the post-adolescent Claudia experiences the terminal illness that is declared to her mother at the age of 54. The script is limited to Claudia's relationships with her father – a recently retired soldier and fragile in the new situation – and her sister, who lives far away, and how she has to make decisions every day and ensure that the situation does not overwhelm her. The director takes care of every shot and every dialogue, what is shown and what is hidden, what is said and what is left silent, in an admirable craftsmanship that shocks viewers. Life in its purest form is rarely shown so convincingly on the screen, which I believe is due to the renunciation of traditional dramatizations. Very well-deserved award from the last Malaga Festival.

kiss of the spider woman (Bill Condon, 2025)

Kiss of the Spider Woman (Bill Condon, 2025)

Manuel Puig's story is so powerful that from the original novel (1976) a play adapted by Puig himself (1983) has been mounted, a splendid film version, with William Hurt, Sónia Braga and Raúl Juliá directed by Héctor Babenco (1985), a stage musical (1993) and now a film based on the latter and the novel. Excellent actors, solid setting and the denunciation of machismo and the exclusion of homosexuals from a prison of the Argentine military dictatorship of the 70s; The story is very rich in nuances and the revolutionary Valentín changes his mentality in his relationship with Molina, who dreams of movies to virtually escape from prison. I liked the musical numbers, although one has the feeling that the genre dilutes the drama of the original. To watch carefully and enjoy while becoming aware (which we said before).

red hangar (Juan Pablo Sallato, 2026)

Red Hangar (Juan Pablo Sallato, 2026)

In black and white, with a docudrama mood, the first hours experienced by Chilean Air Force Captain Jorge Silva of Pinochet's military coup are narrated. Like so many other people in similar situations, there is a radical tear in conscience, since his life is in danger if he does not obey his command, who are organizing torture centers to detain suspected leftists, in one of the most horrible genocidal processes that the Southern Cone has known. The moral dilemma of this captain and his only way out of exile is made clear in an austere but very convincing film, even when it seems that this soldier is ambiguous or hesitates between remaining faithful to the legitimate government or joining the coup plotters.

The choir girl (Urska Djukić, 2025)

The Girl in the Choir (Urska Djukić, 2025)

First work by a Slovenian director who also writes the script, handles the staging with conviction and takes advantage of the abundant close-ups. The teenager Lucía and her Catholic school choir spend a few days outside of Slovenia; The girls' hormones are raging—as best reflected by the international title “Little Trouble Girls”—and the presence of a young bricklayer awakens sexual desire in Lucía for the first time. A minimalist story that transmits the feelings and doubts of a teenager, whose interior struggles between desire and her Catholic morals. The film manages to interest us and make us participate despite it being a very well-known topic.

The silent friend (Ildikó Enyedi, 2025)

The silent friend (Ildikó Enyedi, 2025)

Enyedi is a talented Hungarian director who surprised with the splendid In body and soul (2017), one of the most stimulating films I have seen in recent years. Now he offers a long (145 min.) essay with interspersed stories from different eras that have in common the relationship between human beings and nature based on a majestic ginkgo, a tree of a type considered a fossil record for 290 million years. It also investigates love relationships, the place of women in society for more than a century and other issues. At times I found it fascinating, at others it seemed tiresome. For movie buffs who want to explore new territories.

The unexpected friend (Fabienne Godet, 2025)

The Unexpected Friend (Fabienne Godet, 2025)

“The answering machine” in the original title responds to the role played by Baptiste, a voice imitator and comedian, hired by a writer who cannot find a way to isolate himself to work, such is his dependence on the mobile phone. The problem is when Baptiste not only imitates the voice, but has to adopt the novelist's personality and behave as he would. With a light comedy-drama tone with elements of entanglement, it is not a great film but it is easy to watch and, beyond the humorous misunderstandings, it manages to move people with the uncertainties of human relationships and the chance that leads to unforeseen opportunities.

Pizza movies (Carlo Padial, 2026)

Pizza movies (Carlo Padial, 2026)

The idea of a cultural journalist and her husband of setting up a “themed” pizzeria giving the pizzas movie-loving names soon runs out, especially if that common thread is supported by poorly or poorly developed events (father cared for by an achondroplastic patient). To give it dramatic meat, a trial is set up where this couple of pizza makers are accused of violating Spike Lee's image rights (sic). Lots of cinephile quotes and winks to the film criticism sector for a really insufficient comedy. Refrain.
